CTTA Senior Closed Report 25th February 2018

CTTA SENIOR CLOSED CHAMPIONSHIPS 2017-18

This is a brief report, with the results of each event, for this year’s Senior Closed, held at the YMCA Sports Centre on Sunday 25th February.

OPEN SINGLES

Apart from the semi-final between Abu and Matt, the best contests took place in the group stage and in the quarters. Otherwise, Dave wasted little time or energy in winning all his matches without dropping a set to reclaim the title he last won in 2011-12.

Semi-finals

Dave Harvey beat Luke Gresty 11-6 11-6 11-5

Abu Saleh beat Matt Hartwell 11-9 5-11 9-11 11-7 11-8

Final

Dave Harvey beat Abu Saleh 11-7 11-4 11-5

OPEN DOUBLES

The final was contested between the top two seeds, with Dave & Luke winning through in 4 closely fought sets.

Final

Dave Harvey & Luke Moffat beat Simon Pratten & Abu Saleh 9-11 11-6 11-9 11-8

MINOR SINGLES

This, and the Div 1 Handicap Singles, proved the most competitive events of the day. There was the usual strong entry, which saw 3 of the top 4 seeds eliminated before the semi-finals and only 2 matches from the quarters onwards resulting in straight-set wins. In the 8 years since this very successful event was first introduced, no player has yet won it twice.

Semi-finals

Andy East beat Simon Philp 15-13 11-3 11-9

Louis Clark beat Mike Tyrrell 10-12 11-7 11-9 11-9

Final

Louis Clark beat Andy East 11-8 11-7 5-11 13-11

MINOR DOUBLES

Unusually, the majority of the partnerships entered were scratch pairings, with Chairman Dave and Andy justifying their top seeding.

Final

Andy East & Dave Metcalfe beat Rob Amphlett & Carol Philp 11-9 11-8 8-11 11-0

SENIOR SINGLES

A much larger entry than last year for this event, where Matt experienced little trouble in taking the honours.

Final

Matt Hartwell beat Luke Gresty 12-10 11-6 11-2

VETERANS SINGLES

This was a repeat of the Open Singles final – and with the same outcome - with Dave comfortably retaining his title.

Final

Dave Harvey beat Abu Saleh 11-3 11-6 11-9

MASTERS SINGLES

It was good to see unfamiliar names (for this event) – but hardly fresh faces! – contesting the later stages. Two very close semi-finals were followed by a final between Rob and Andy which was a much more even battle than the score might suggest.

Final

Rob Amplett beat Andy East 11-8 11-8 11-8

DIVISION 1 HANDICAP SINGLES

Final

Ben Roberts beat Neil Fraser 11-7 12-10 14-12

DIVISION 2 HANDICAP SINGLES

Final

Rob Amphlett beat Louis Clark 11-4 11-6 11-5

DIVISION 3 HANDICAP SINGLES

Final

Harry Tyrrell beat Hannah Sharpe 11-7 13-11 8-11 11-9

Finally, the CTTA would like to express its thanks to all those involved in the organisation and running of the tournament, both before and on the day – to the YMCA for the venue, to the volunteer umpires and, not least, to the players themselves.

We hope to see you all at the Presentation and Quiz Evening on Thursday 12th April at the Cheltenham Civil Service Club.
